the next american idol

a few months ago, my coworker beth took her son david to audition for american idol in omaha.

last night his audition aired...and he's amazing! and, beth was on tv shrieking, too. it's all very exciting.

sisters are doin it for themselves!

not really but i couldn't think of another line from a song to represent the past weekend.

john and i drove down to dallas on friday to spend the weekend with my family. the drive down was pretty uneventful. probably because i slept and watched episodes of the office the whole time. i love that darn portable dvd player!

one of the purposes of our visit was to host a pampered chef show with my sister for the angioma alliance, the organization which raises money for angioma awareness and research. (my sister was diagnosed in august and had hers removed in september.) it went so much better than i had anticipated. we sold over $2000 worth of products and as a result, we made about $350for the organization. i couldn't be happier.

on sunday, rachel and i went to see 27 dresses before our family dinner to celebrate my dad's birthday. dinner was so good! barbara made a turkey dinner and a delicious chocolate cake for dessert. my only regret is not taking some of the cake home with us!(oh, and leaving the leftover turkey in rachel's fridge.)

it was really nice to have a weekend without drama. usually our dallas trips end with someone getting pissed (usually me), someone being a brat (usually cody or michael), and someone ignoring me (usually rachel). i had a great conversation with my dad and barbara on saturday morning and another great discussion with rachel on saturday after the party. i don't know if i am maturing more, but things just feel different now than they did before.

and now, we prepare for game night!!! bring it on!

the five hardest working kids in showbusiness

i'm working on a big recap of our weekend in dallas but while i finish composing it, i leave you with this.

OH MY GOD.

music makes the people come together

i've been listening to a bunch of new music lately. it may not be new to you but it's new to my ipod. so far, i love the colbie calliat cd as well as ben harper's "lifeline".

i am not a fan of blake lewis' cd. he's good in moderation but i only made it through 8 songs the first go through.

also, carrie underwood is amazing. say what you will about country but that girl can sing.

this weekend, we're heading to dallas to celebrate my dad's birthday AND so that my sister can have a pampered chef party. i'm super excited to see my family but, i think i may be more excited to play rock band.

singSTAR!

in addition to guitar hero, we recently purchased sing star, possibly one of the greatest games ever invented. it's a karaoke game that you play through the play station 2 - and i rule at it. the original package was the 80's version, complete with two microphones and 30+ of your favorite 80's songs.

over the weekend we borrowed the pop version from shannon and all i can say is wow. it's too bad star search isn't on anymore because i would be the returning champion over and over.

this weekend we're going to dallas and i may have to bring it with me.

it's that much fun.

and, i am counting down the days until march 19th so that i can buy the 90's version. i'm officially a loser.

a moment froze in time

one thing that i didn't mention is that i am going to be losing my job within the next year. as some of you know, my company is in the process of being sold and only a select few of current employees will continue employment with the purchasers. the sale is supposed to close on March 31st, but that is contingent upon regulatory approval. there are so many approvals utility companies need to go through before the sale can acutally take place. Once the sale closes, i've accepted a six month transitional offer with the purchasers to ensure a smooth transition of benefit administration.

at first, i was SO upset about this. mostly because i love my job and i love this company more than i can say. i have so much respect for the leadership and most importantly, my boss. she's given me opportunities that have challenged me as well as providing me with great skills that will make my resume shine.

i started looking for other opportunities when the sale was first announced because i had a sneaking suspicion that i would not have a job post close. i've probably been on 6 interviews since that time and have received one offer. nothing has felt right yet and with about a year left of "stable" income, i feel that i can be picky. of course in november, i probably won't feel the same however, with 4.5 months severance after my 6 month transitional offer i should have plenty of time to find something, right?

everything happens for a reason and i am sure i will find the right job for me over the next several months.

a recap

the past few months have been pretty chaotic. not britney chaotic, but crazy none-the-less.

in november, john and i celebrated our fourth wedding anniversary by taking a trip to ft. scott, kansas and treating ourselves to a night at a bed and breakfast. the house was amazing. our room was a mini suite with a 50 inch hdtv complete with static. it was awful. we watched "the princess bride" with more lines across the screen than i care to remember. we also got a couple's massage which was held in the b&b's spa. and by spa, i mean underground room with two massage tables and incense. we both enjoyed the massage - especially when the "mood music" was playing loud waves crashing and i started cracking up because i thought john was snoring.

november also consisted of thanksgiving, lots of holiday shopping and a trip to dallas for me. while in dallas, i got to meet my little brother, cody's girlfriend. her name is lizzie and they are in LUUUUVVV. seriously, it's so weird to see my 14 year old brother with a girlfriend - but he's happy. and, a month and a half later they are still together so it must be serious ;)

december flew by. with all of the holiday parties, holidays and my birthday, it was crazy. also in december, my bff alison had her baby. on december 21st (my brother michael's birthday) she gave birth to my little angel, emma madison. she's super cute but super fussy (or so i have been told). good thing i bought her a bouncy chair - it's the only thing she sleeps in. what a good investment.

christmas was mostly good. we decided to spend christmas eve alone and spend christmas day with john's family. on christmas eve we went to mass at 4 (NEVER doing that again) and then i cooked an amazing dinner of turkey breast, sweet potatoes, dressing, asparagus and for dessert - pecan pie. we also started a new tradition this year to get rid of all of our junky ornaments. on christmas eve we each gave each other a new ornament. mine was very sentimental and handmade (not by me, duh) while john presented me with an adorable hallmark keepsake ornament. i really like this tradition! christmas day we went to john's parents at about 11 and were there ALL DAY. that's all i am going to say about that.

new years was mellow as usual. we played a little bit of guitar hero and watched the dmb piedmont park dvd. naturally, we were in bed by 12:05.

and there you have it.

did the cat get your tongue?

in november, after months of having little to say, i decided that i needed to take a break from blogging. a lot of changes have occured since my last post and, i really miss being able to use this venue for clearing my mind.

some things you probably need to know about me:

i moved to kansas city in 2002 to be with the love of my life, john. we met through a dave matthews band mailing list a few years before and did the long distance thing until neither of us could stand it anymore. if you want to learn more about our relationship, go here.

cast of characters:

john ~ the love of my life, my husband, best friend and confidante
oliver ~ the boy beagle
susie ~ the girl beagle
alison ~ my bff since 8th grade (we've know each other since we were 4 but that's another story for another time.)
elise ~ my other bff
shannon ~ my work bff (i know, everyone is a bff)
rachel ~ my sister
cody ~ my brother
michael ~ my brother

there will be more added later but this is a good start.

obsessed

is there anyone who
ever remembers changing there mind from
the paint on a sign?
is there anyone who really recalls
ever breaking rank at all
for something someone yelled real loud one time

everyone believes
in how they think it ought to be
everyone believes
and they're not going easily

belief is a beautiful armor
but makes for the heaviest sword
like punching under water
you never can hit who you're trying for

some need the exhibition
and some have to know they tried
it's the chemical weapon
for the war that's raging on inside

everyone believes
from emptiness to everything
everyone believes
and no ones going quietly

we're never gonna win the world
we're never gonna stop the war
we're never gonna beat this
if belief is what we're fighting for

what puts a hundred thousand children in the sand
belief can
belief can
what puts the folded flag inside his mother's hand
belief can
belief can

but makes for the heaviest sword

well here we are. i retired my blog, shaynanagins a few months ago and have missed my outlet for expressing frustration, humor and life stories. a lot has happened since my last post and i am ready to fill you all in.

but, if you are ever in the mood for old shayna - i've left it open to remember all of those good times.
